About

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

The Okaloosa & Walton County League strives to be a voice for citizens and a force for progress on the Emerald Coast. In the League your hands-on work to safeguard democracy leads to civic improvement. Democracy is not a spectator sport! Join the League and get involved in shaping the important issues and keeping our community strong. Help make government work for everyone!

In a nutshell, the mission of League is to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government. League is particularly concerned with issues arising from local, state or national needs. When an issue is identified, League studies it in–depth — usually over a period of one or more years — before agreeing on a consensus position. Once consensus is reached the League takes action in the form of efforts to inform, build public opinion and influence the legislature.

We want citizens to get involved by learning about the important issues affecting our communities and making their voices heard by elected representatives. Local chapters tackle local issues such as zoning, schools, housing and metropolitan growth. The State League acts on statewide matters such as tax systems, state constitutional issues and election procedures. The National League is concerned with both foreign and domestic affairs. League legislative priorities evolve over time to reflect the changing needs of society and critical Our Workissues of concern, but the organization remains true to its basic purpose: to make democracy work for all citizens.

League has hundreds of local Leagues nationwide in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands. Any citizen aged 18 or older is eligible for League membership, so if you are ready to get involved and make a difference in your community, please join us. Remember: men can join League, too!
